FED2006 - Sydney

After many months of concern at how things would pan out with our Society hosting the Zebra Finch Federation weekend, I can say that I am more than pleased with the way things turned out. The transport ran smoothly organised by Ron, with the assistance of Jim and Garry. The venue itself was great and the management could not do enough to help us whenever we had a request. The interstaters and many locals made their way to the Panthers club for Friday night dinner. The weather looked a problem but out pretty good. The judging went smoothly with several birds being knocked out for varying reasons but all legitimately so and it is something I wholeheartedly agree with. The judges all did a great job and thank you. Things went along fairly quickly with the new format and I can see in the future that perhaps only 2 pairs of judges may be needed so as to lengthen the judging time a little to make more of a spectacle of the event.

The bird auction held after judging had to be seen to be believed. Bill Sewell hates being the centre of attention but we talked him into being the auctioneer for the day and what a job he did. I think the cheapest pairs went for $25 and the highest pair went for $300. The average was about $60 a pair and there were some nice birds on offer. I hope a similar sale goes ahead in Perth next year. It would be great to see. Thanks William.

The Saturday night dinner was a hit with the more formal presentation being done in the evening. This affords more recognition to those that were successful than how it has been done in the past. An auction of donated birds was conducted during the evening which was very popular. Thank you to all who donated birds for this. The venue staff did a fantastic job of the dinner and again, this made life easier to run things.

The Sunday meeting was Chaired by Peter Filmer ( thanks Pete! ) and although there was concern raised that not enough time was allocated for the meeting (we had set the time for the meeting to be from 9am to 1.30pm) the meeting finished well ahead of time at 11.30am. Kay & Geoff Roberts put lunch on at their place on Sunday afternoon and thank you both.

Monday was a bit cloudy to start with and about 24 people made their way by bus to the Featherdale Wildlife Park at Doonside for a visit. The convoy then headed north to the Hockley residence where Di and Bruce hosted lunch for everyone. Thanks to both of you for being such welcoming hosts. I would like to thank all those members that assisted with the running of the weekend. Thanks to the Committee members for your help, especially Frank for again capably handling our finances. Thanks also to Grant for organizing the coach for the Monday trip to Featherdale and Gosford and to Eric & Val Brown for their big effort in arranging all the raffle prizes for the weekend. Thanks also go to Golden Cob for their more than generous donation to our society. I believe it was easily the best one I have attended and we have made a high benchmark for others to now aim at.
