Sydney Water Exemptions

7A. USE OF WATER FOR COOLING BY POULTRY FARMERS AND BIRD AVIARIES
This Exemption applies to poultry farm businesses and bird aviaries in operations such as, but not limited to:

  • Sprinklers on roof sheds
  • Misting sprays inside sheds

    Conditions: These systems should only be used when necessary due to high temperatures.

    3B. USE OF WATER FOR HOSING HARD SURFACES FOR PUBLIC HEALTH AND HYGIENE REASONS
    This exemption applies to non-residential customers that need to use water to spot clean hard surfaces for public health and safety only. This limited exemption includes: This exemption also includes cleaning similar areas (to list above in:

  • Hospital and aged care facilities
  • Community centres
  • Educational facilities
  • Childcare centres
  • Sporting clubs and club houses
  • Animal shelters, animal handling facilities, registered breeders, commercial kennels and dairies

    This exemption ONLY applies where it is necessary to spot clean using water for public health and safety. It is requested that brooms or other waterless alternatives, including outdoor blowers or vacuumed, are used when cleaning whenever possible. Hoses must only be used when a broom is unable to satisfactorily spot clean the surface to maintain an acceptable standard of public health and Sydney Water will conduct regular audits and you may be asked to demonstrate the health and hygiene risks that necessitate the use of water for cleaning. Penalties of $220 will apply for the unauthorised use of water.

    Conditions
    1. It is mandatory that water is used for spot cleaning affected areas only. The indiscriminate use of water is prohibited.
    2. It is mandatory that a hand-held hose with a trigger nozzle or high pressure water cleaning equipment is used when cleaning.
    3. A suitable backflow prevention containment device must be in place
    4. The management of any wastewater run-off from cleaning operations that does not discharge to the sewer should comply with the requirements of the local council and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
    5. Any standpipe that is used must be metered and issued or approved by Sydney Water
