Ringing Birds
Closed metal rings Closed metal rings are used to identify or match the bird to it's breeder. All shows have a Young Bird section which is for birds of a certain age. The closed metal rings indicate the year the bird was bred and through the clubs ring registrar, the breeders name can be obtained if required. In doing this you can perhaps obtain information on the bird you purchased. You can obtain information on it's bloodline or perhaps the bird was split for a colour you were not aware of.
The ringing or your birds is crucial in identifying and keeping track of them for a number of different reasons. Most breeders place a closed metal ring on one leg and a split plastic ring on the other leg to keep track of a particular bloodline or family of your birds. If your birds wear plastic split rings you can tell from outside your holding cage who is related to who etc.
Split rings can also be used for marking birds that may be split for other colours. E.g., a bird may visually be a normal Grey but may be split for Yellowbill or Blackfronted etc. You can mark all your split Yellowbill with a yellow ring so you can control breeding results. When you disposed of unwanted birds, the split plasticrings can easily be removed for re use on another bird.
Ringing birds is an important part of bird keeping and if done carefully, is easy to do and will not cause any harm to your birds.
Are marked with a year, bird club identifying initials or letters and each ring is marked with an individual identifying number.
